There is nothing much lacking with the init.d way - at least not now everyone mostly follows LSB standards. It's very quick. Granted in the old days, 15 years back, there was some benefit to parallelising startup. But these days things boot pretty quickly as they are. If you need to keep a service alive, there's monit. It's like when Sun released their behemouth java monster - what was that called?
