I've ordered a Y cable so that should sort it if it is on the edge of 
current limiting.  Mobo has a high current mode for iPhone & iPad 
charging.  However, there are no BIOS options and apparently it needs a 
driver to enable it!!!   Can't see that the machine is so marginal on 
power that it is falling over at 500mA from a USB port.
