Couldn't agree more. GC isn't a panacea but for a GUI app like an IDE
where buffers are being passed around without any clear notion of
ownership - why would anyone want any other solution?[0]

There's a reason that standard C and C++ are no longer the first choice
GUI programming languages.

Yup.

[0] Reference counting could probably be made to work, but you're bound
    to hit some circular references and have to worry about who has the
    weak reference...  Yuk.
