Cuneiform is pictographic in origin too; but it was developed by scribes who mainly used wedge-shaped reeds to stamp on clay tablets, rather than ink and pen to write on papyrus (or paint on walls,) so the shapes were more abstract than hieroglyphs. IIRC, as it changed over time the characters eventually became unrecognizable as even abstract pictures unless you compare them against the earlier forms.
