  You can indeed no longer use 'less-secure' apps, but you can use 'App
passwords' instead. That basically means that instead of your Google
account password, you use a special generated password, just for this
purpose.

  I use (Google) 'App passwords' in Thunderbird to access my Gmail
accounts.
