Using God as leverage is a common tactic of toxic religion. It is taking 
the highest possible authority and attaching it to consequences in order 
to control behavior. It's invoking God not as something to be 
encountered or understood, but as a force to pressure compliance. 
Believe this or face punishment. Stay loyal or lose favor. Step out of 
line and risk everything. Your connection to God is filtered through 
fear. God becomes the mechanism that enforces the system.

I ask now that you put away what you are reading unless it is a bible or 
a hymnal. If you have a cellphone, turn it off so that it will not 
interrupt the proceedings. Remember that this is God's house, so watch 
your mouth and keep your shoes on.
