Windows support for many types of hardware can be poor, and if you install the OS yourself instead of using pre-installed OEM versions, there are often things that don't quite work, or you can't get the hardware to work without extra unwanted software. A typical example of that is WLAN on laptops - sometimes it is hard to get "standard" windows drivers so that it works with the normal XP wireless networking gui, and you instead have to suffer some monstrosity that the hardware vendor thinks is better. With Linux, using modern distros, hardware tends to work perfectly well straight out of the box. The big exception is if you need high speed 3D graphics - then you typically need to install the binary drivers (but that's usually easy too). WLAN also used to be a problem, but I haven't had any issues for several years. I prefer Linux as the VM host because it is more efficient, and you can get much faster disk and file access (especially with multiple disks in software raid). I also find that USB in VirtualBox guests can be a touch-and-go affair with a Windows host, while it is flawless with a Linux host.
