I note that you acknowledge that circumstances and training have an effect. I wonder if the circumstances that pertain to programming (indentation, layout, operator precedence, common patterns...) as well as the training to be a programmer (mathematics, syntax, parsing...) might have an effect on the currently un-evidenced "rule of three". But really all that's happening here is that you like "rules" and I don't. To that limited extent, there is an element of postmodernism at play here. -- Ben.
