** Identity ** Panopticists: What’s on the Internet doesn’t make up your entire identity, but only a contributing factor of such. Individualists: Our identity should be defined by our actions and interactions in real life, not our online presence. ** Privacy ** Panopticists: We shouldn’t mind our information being shared with the world, especially if we don’t have anything incriminating. Individualists: We should be in control of the data on the Internet that contains personal information. ** Data Ownership ** Panopticists: We do not mind if commercial organizations own our data. This will only make our live easier. For example, if a company knows ahead of time what we want, shopping has now become easy. Individualists: Our online presence and content belongs to us and us alone, all the data we have chosen to upload should remain ours and not in the hands of anyone else, meaning if we chose to delete it, it should be deleted everywhere. ** Judgment ** Panopticists: People should not be able to hide their past, it is fair to know about it and understand people’s history and who they are accordingly. People change; that’s just part of growing as a human being. Individualists: People evolve and grow over time, it is unfair to be defined but what my previous Internet persona was. Individualists call for transparency in situations like the following: if one is rejected from a job due to the Google search associated with their name, we have the right to ask for that reason. ** Self Projection ** Panopticists: The information people have about us are truthful and strongly indicates how we’ve grown both up and down throughout life. Individualists: The Internet allows me to tell people who I want to be known as, as such I should be able to alter it as I please. ** Societal Shift ** Panopticists: People should understand that humans grow and mature throughout life; our online identities will become an example of that. Something done in high school doesn’t represent who you are today, but how you have grown. If everyone shared all of their knowledge, there would be more opportunities for people to become smarter, healthier, social and conscious of their actions. Individualists: People shouldn’t judge others based off their online presence, or Google search results. It should become the norm that the only conclusions you draw about an individual are the conclusions you derived from interacting with them, their words and actions, and not what their Internet presence says about them.
