When roughly was the signage changed on the entry slip road to a motorway? I'm sure I remember an explicit "70" speed limit sign at one time, whereas nowadays it's a National Speed Limit sign (black diagonal bar on white background) in the comparatively unusual cases where the the speed limit on the approach road to the junction isn't already NSL. I presume the NSL signage relies on an implied 70 limit for cars on all dual carriageways and motorways, and was done so the limit for those roads can be changed at a stroke, without a lot of sign changes, if it is ever necessary to impose a blanket lower limit. Did the removal of the "70" sign happen at around the same time as the removal of the "no learners, mopeds and animals" signs?
