$1 million bond for Durham teacher charged with 10 counts of sex exploitation

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — A Durham teacher accused of a slew of sex crimes
involving minors is in jail under a $1 million bond. 

CBS 17 was in the courtroom Thursday when Miguel Angel Tirado III, a
teacher employed by Durham Public Schools who taught at Jordan High
School, was given the bond under which he is being held at the Durham
County Jail. 

The bond came after a Durham Assistant District Attorney initially
requested it to be set at $500,000. Instead of granting the requested
bond, the judge chose to double it after confirming Tirado’s profession
as a high school teacher. 

Warrants show Tirado faces 10 felony counts of second-degree sexual
exploitation of a minor. Descriptions of the alleged crimes state that
he distributed child pornography videos using the Kik messaging app.
Those videos included children as young as 5-7 years old, warrants said. 

In one of the videos, warrants said an adult male who was in the
presence of a 7-9 year old female forced her to “perform oral sex” while
she sat on a toilet. Another included a 5-7 year old female in a school
uniform also being forced to perform oral sex on an adult male. 

The other eight videos described in warrant include graphic content
which include vaginal penetration and at least one male child. One of
the videos was a compilation of more than 20 clips including “nude
prepubescent children engages in sexual activity or sex acts with
adults.” 

According to the Durham Police Department, investigators arrested Tirado
on Wednesday with assistance of the FBI’s Violent Crimes Against
Children Task Force based in Raleigh. 

Durham Public Schools have confirmed that Tirado was hired in 2024 as a
science teacher. A notice of Tirado’s arrest and charges was sent to all
families of students who were taught in his classroom by way of a
robocall. 

The message that went out was provided to CBS 17. In full, it said:

“Good afternoon, Jordan Family,

This is Susan Taylor, principal of Jordan High School, calling to share
news about the off-campus arrest of one of our teachers this morning.
While I am not at liberty to share details about the arrest, please know
that this is an active investigation being conducted by our law
enforcement partners. 

To ensure that teaching and learning continue without disruption, we are
working quickly to find and appoint a substitute teacher. 

Thank you for your attention and support.”
