Army to demolish radioactive clubhouse in St. Louis County, raising fears of widespread nuclear contamination in residential areas

HAZELWOOD, Mo. — For 13 years, Dawn Chapman and other St. Louis-area
moms have fought to uncover the full damage caused by radioactive
contamination throughout the region. 

Their fight hasn't been in vain, as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
announced on Friday that they plan to demolish a structure in Hazelwood
after the ground beneath it tested positive for radioactive waste. But,
as every positive test vindicates the JustMomsSTL group, it also signals
the need for further testing and worries of more contamination. 

The Corps plans to demolish the former clubhouse at the closed French
Quarter apartment complex in Hazelwood, telling 5 On Your Side that the
destruction was necessary for officials to access and remediate the
contamination beneath the structure safely. 

“We are following the data and taking the actions needed to advance
remediation efforts along Coldwater Creek safely and effectively,” St.
Louis District Commander Col. Andy Pannier said in the statement. “We
will continue to prioritize the health and well-being of the community,
guided by data-driven decisions, and keep the community informed
throughout the process.” 

The area around the complex has faced repeated flooding since Coldwater
Creek's nuclear waste contamination in the 70s, which Chapman said
brought the contaminated material from the creek onto land. Homes and
other structures were then built on top of the contamination as
development expanded in the area, including the now-vacant French
Quarter apartment complex. 

Chapman said she and other members of JustMomsSTL have helped numerous
people who previously lived at the complex apply for the Radiation
Exposure Compensation Act, or RECA, which pays families who got sick or
had family members die from being exposed to radiation from the U.S.
nuclear weapons program. She commended the Corps for listening to the
community and expanding testing to other areas, but is angry at the
federal agencies that knew the risk of contamination in the region for
decades and did nothing about it. 

"There's nowhere else in the United States where something like this is
happening in a residential area," Chapman asked. "This radioactive waste
was already out and contaminating that whole area, and only now is it
being looked for. This has had the chance to hurt this community for
decades." 

The North County Community Advisory Group, which was formed to remove
radioactive waste from the St. Louis region and to advocate for north
St. Louis County, holds monthly public meetings to educate and update
the public on the latest contamination news from the region. They
usually hold their meetings on the first Thursday of the month at the
Black Jack Fire House. People interested in getting involved can attend
their next meeting on June 4 at 6:30 p.m.
