About registration to the old BBS systems, one would provide their phone number. At some point in the process, the BBS would inform the applicant to hang up, and tell the applicant that the BBS would call the applicants number, the one attached to the applicants computer/modem. The applicant hangs up. The BBS calls that number. The BBS dos a handshake with the router, and if successful, the applicant is approved and is then sent to the login screen. I remember running a BBS with 4 lines, 4 modems all to one Atari 130XE that was cabled to a 8Bit IBM MoBo, connected to a 80 Meg Maxtor HDD. We thought 80Meg was overkill :) -- Posted on RetroBBS
