The story is about the expense of doing a hardware job with software.

 In the 1960's the US governmen tried to calm the population in the eventuality of nuclear war by issuing instruction.  The chances that the instructions would be useful was the same as winning the lottery.  The parody instruction born was:  "Bend over hard with the head between your legs and kiss your ass goodbye."
  This story is from the last century when the government, the mob, the business and the unions were intertwined and the whole system was going down the drain.  Today is same same but different.
  One business was so bled by distribution leaches, which had intangible territories, that called for my help.  The plan was simple.  Switch to equipment that did not have local distributors so you can shop around.  On paper everything made sense but the problem was a hardware module (SigMeter).  This module was a gem and extremely hard to simulate even for a special case that did not even come close to the capabilities of the hardware.  I pleaded with the dudes.  "I'll buy 3 modules from different distributors at 42% of the price available to you and that will last 2-3 lifetimes".  The answer was paranoia... but probably true.  "If someone breaks in and destroys my stock, I'm screwed".
  By no means, I claim that I was able to even come close to emulating a SigMeter but the software did the job.  The cost was 36k versus 5k the price at the time for the module.  As a general rule: Simulating hardware with software is a Kiss Your Ass Goodbye endeavor.
