In Charles Perrault's 1697 original fairy tale, it was about slippers trimmed with fox fur (in French, "vair"). The translator confused this word with the similar-sounding "verre" (glass, crystal). This version is logical, because in that era, at the court of Louis XIV, fur-trimmed shoes were in fashion - they were worn, for example, by the king's favorite, Madame de Maintenon. So, most likely, Cinderella danced at the ball in something like luxurious boots. -- [via JLA Forums] rec.arts.disney.animation on the web: http://www.jlaforums.com/viewforum.php?f=410
