A woman who lives beside the R.M. Palmer Co. chocolate plant that exploded
Friday has filed a lawsuit claiming negligence by the West Reading company
led to the blast.

Attorneys for Betty Wright filed the suit Monday in Philadelphia County
Court. She is seeking punitive damages of at least $50,000.

The civil suit, which was prepared for Wright by Philadelphia law firm
Morgan & Morgan, asks for a jury trial.

Company officials did not immediately respond Tuesday to requests for
comment on the suit.

The suit states that Wright lives in an apartment at 5 S. Second Ave. That
building sits directly north of the chocolate plant that exploded just
before 5 p.m. Friday, killing seven and injuring several others.

The building where Wright lives is one of three in the area that has been
temporarily condemned because of potential structural damage caused by the
blast.

The suit says Wright was inside her apartment when the explosion occurred,
and that she was lifted off her feet by it and thrown across the room. She
suffered severe and permanent injuries as well as a loss of property and
belongings, the suit claims.

“As a result of the aforesaid injuries, the plaintiff sustained physical
pain and suffering, all of which have required or will require medical
care and treatment,” the suit reads.

The suit claims Wright’s injuries have caused her a loss of the everyday
pleasures and enjoyments of life, as well as embarrassment, humiliation,
scarring and disfigurement.

She has also had to incur medical expenses — with the potential for more
costs in the future — and the loss of wages, the suit says.

The suit places blame for the blast on the company, saying it failed to
properly inspect, repair and test the property to prevent the devastating
explosion.

“The subject incident and the injuries and damages of the plaintiff were
the result of the defendant’s negligent and/or reckless management,
supervision, hiring and/or training of the employees that conducted the
installation, maintenance and/or repairs of the property, including the
gas lines and/or valves and/or appliances on or before March 24, 2023,” it
reads.

The suit also states that the company did not warn Wright that she was
living next to a potential explosive hazard.

The explosion is the subject of an ongoing investigation, with state
police taking the lead in trying to determine the cause and origin of the
blast. State police have not released any details of that investigation.
