CINCINNATI (WXIX) - Cincinnati Vice Mayor Jan-Michele Lemon Kearney said the “violent actions of the instigator(s)” provoked a group to respond with “violent actions” in the downtown brawl that has Cincinnati in the national spotlight. Kearney said in an email containing her statement that “Cincinnati is in good hands, and we will be fine.” The vice mayor condemned the “violent actions” of the “instigator(s),” which were met with “violent actions of those who responded to the provocation.” Let us be clear. We do not condone violence. We condemn the violent actions of the instigator(s) of the fight as well as the violent actions of those who responded to the provocation. Opportunists are trying to use this incident as a way to divide us – racially and politically -- and cast our great City in a false and negative light. Every city has challenges, and we confront our challenges head on. We must stand together and work for justice, knowing that a united Cincinnati is strong and victorious. Cincinnati Vice Mayor Jan-Michele Lemon Kearney statement Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge has not announced specifics of what preceded the brawl that was captured on video and subsequently went viral. She did say alcohol is thought to have been a major contributing factor to the brawl, leading to the verbal altercation that led to the dispute. Three people have been arrested in connection with what Cincinnati police say was a “violent attack” at Fourth and Elm streets on July 26. During their initial arraignments Wednesday, police said Montianez Merriweather and Jermaine Matthews coordinated the brawl, planned “an ambush” or purposely set it up. Both of their defense attorneys objected and insisted they were struck first by the same man they are both accused of beating. DeKyra Vernon, 24, was arrested on charges of felonious assault, assault and aggravated rioting, according to police. Warrants have been issued for two other suspects. Woman in Viral Video Videos from July 26 show a woman brutally beaten, lying on the ground with blood streaming down her face. That woman, named Holly, talked with FOX19 NOW’s Tricia Macke on Wednesday. “By now, everyone has seen the videos involving the brawl in downtown Cincinnati over the weekend. At the end of the videos, a woman is clearly knocked out. “Her name is Holly and I have permission to use her photo. She is badly bruised, was in the hospital for days and is in a lot of pain. Severe concussion and no broken bones.” Tricia Macke @FOX19Tricia · Follow By now, everyone has seen the videos involving the brawl in downtown Cincinnati over the weekend.
