I should have added that when Google maps looses focus for the zoom and navigation keys, it still understands the comma and period keys to toggle slide-in menus, Ctrl-/ to display the shortcut pop-up menu, and the Ctrl-Shift [12345] Keys to toggle overlays.  So, the website doesn't completely lose keyboard focus, just certain navigation keys.
