Westbound I-94 closed at Lowry Tunnel after semi hits wall, spills load of ammunition

The Minnesota State Patrol is investigating a crash on Interstate 94 at 
the Lowry Tunnel in Minneapolis that closed the highway down for most of 
Friday afternoon.

A semi-truck carrying ammunition crashed into the median wall and rolled 
over just before 11 a.m. while heading west into the tunnel, shearing a 
side from the semi-trailer and scattering debris into the eastbound lanes.

Hazardous materials aren’t allowed to be transported through the Lowry 
Tunnel, but a State Patrol spokesperson said this type of ammunition was 
allowed.

The eastbound lanes were back open about 90 minutes later, but crews 
worked for several more hours to clear wreckage from the westbound side of 
the tunnel. Westbound lanes were back open as of 4:30 p.m.

The driver is said to have non-life-threatening injuries, and no other 
vehicles were involved in the crash.
