PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — One day after someone drove an SUV full of explosives into the Multnomah Athletic Club in Southwest Portland and died, more details are emerging about the possible driver. The Portland Police Bureau is leading the investigation. When KOIN 6 News inquired for more information on Sunday, PPB maintained that they could not officially identify the driver until the Medical Examiner could make a determination. However, a law enforcement source close to the investigation told KOIN 6 News, on condition of anonymity, that the driver is believed to be Bruce Whitman. https://www.koin.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/10/2026/05/image_d255e5.png ?resize=225,301 Bruce Whitman in an image that appeared in a letter from the MAC According to the source, Whitman had two Red Flag orders filed with the courts, one in 2022 and one earlier this year, for allegedly harassing MAC members on multiple occasions and threatening physical harm to some. The documents also allege that Whitman believed people at the MAC were conspiring against him. On Saturday, KOIN 6 News spoke with neighbors and friends of Whitman. They said Whitman was also a former employee at the MAC. Just before 3 a.m. on Saturday, Portland Fire and Rescue responded to reports that a vehicle had crashed into the MAC and then caught fire. The driver was found dead at the scene. The PPB investigation revealed the SUV was full of homemade explosives, some of which ignited, while others partially ignited, and others did not detonate. The ground floor of the MAC was heavily damaged and it may be closed for some time while repairs are being completed. No one was inside the building at the time and there were no reported injuries. Portland police, with the assistance of the FBI and other agencies, spent hours carefully investigating the scene and using robots to safely detonate and dismantle the remaining explosives. The car was finally removed from inside the building late Saturday night. https://www.koin.com/news/portland/source-ids-alleged-suspect-who-crashed -suv-full-of-explosives-into-the-mac-and-died/
