Hi *,

what’s the status of that? There’s a prerelease in sid, and
the Canonical employees have already updated even ancient
versions of *buntu, but there’s nothing in Debian, nor in
the packaging repository.

This is probably security-relevant for stretch… and GA was
planned to be released two weeks ago today as b08 (I haven’t
followed it closely, so I don’t know the precise numbers).
There’s no ETA or anything…

What I don’t understand is why the new version isn’t uploaded
to Debian and then synchronised into *buntu, would that not be
less work, even?

It’s been over three weeks since the release, what (besides
GCC breaking everything) gives?

Hi Thorsten,

I spoke with Matthias about 8u242 last weekend (thanks for your email
on January 28th as a reminder). I am in process of building the 8u242
source package uploaded to Debian unstable against stretch for a
stretch-security upload. I should be able to complete the builds and
smoke-tests by the end of the week and will upload once I get the
go-ahead from the Security Team.

Cheers,
tony

thanks for the update, but… Debian unstable has not yet been updated
to the GA release yet. Perhaps doing that first would be sensible?

If I can help in any way (I’m a DD) do tell. I regularily build the
uploaded versions for $orkplace, see below, for precise, trusty,
xenial (if not done by you), wheezy, jessie, and recently buster,
locally, so I’m familiar with them.

Uhh... right (my bad; I blame jet-lag).  8u242-b04 is not what we
want.  We should start with an upload of the GA release to unstable.

I'm building on a personal laptop and not doing so as part of $dayjob,
so the builds take a bit longer for me.  Based on my chat with Matthias
at FOSDEM, we should go ahead with the Debian uploads JDK 8.

Thorsten, if you have cycles to handle the GA upload to unstable, please
go ahead and do so.  Otherwise, I will do it by the end of the week.

Thank you for the correction and pushing this forward,
tony

OK, will do so, I can justify doing this partially during daytime ☻

I’ve prepared an upload, which I’m currently building locally in
cowbuilder, for testing it a bit (any suggestions, other than run
a few applications?). I’ve looked at and merged the Ubuntu changes
and updated the ARM tags (both 32/64-bit) to their GA equivalents
as well.

I’ll upload to sid if things seem to work, as discussed. I’ve also
requested membership in the Launchpad team, so I can push my work
to Bazaar, but that’s pending manual approval (otherwise someone
can just push it after I uploaded it).

I had forgotten just how long the testsuite runs. I guess I’m
calling it a night and continue testing when it built tomorrow.

Done now, it built, with the usual handful of test failures, but
most passing, and Jenkins still works after upgrading, so…

Things I noticed afterwards:
• debian/generate-*.sh can go away
• does anyone check lintian? tons of easy picks…

did you have a chance to look at my upload to unstable, and perhaps
proceed in preparing the security upload to stretch?

I’ve done my rebuilds for the older releases and buster in the
meantime (but not been able to test it more yet).

Yeah, I wanted to let it settle in unstable for a few days, but a
stretch-security build is already running and should appear in the
next days.

Cheers,

yeah, that’s sensible, although I don’t know how many sid users
use Java 8 (I run a Jenkins instance under it); the smoketests
that were talked about might be interesting.
