(Gray News) - A Florida man will soon be put to death 30 years after fracturing an infant’s skull and throwing her into a pond while on probation for felony child abuse. Andrew Richard Lukehart, of Jacksonville, is scheduled to be executed at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 2, by the electric chair. Governor Ron DeSantis signed Lukehart’s death warrant on May 1. On Feb. 25, 1996, Lukehart was trying to change five-month-old Gabrielle Hanshaw’s diaper when she would not lay flat, he said. He then “forcefully and repeatedly pushed her head and neck to the floor.” Before that, however, Lukehart had told officers that he dropped her, shook her, and then, in a panic, threw her body into a pond after realizing she had died. The medical examiner said at least five separate blows to her head were recorded. He was found guilty of first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse in 1997. The year before Hanshaw was murdered, Lukehart was found guilty of child abuse against another infant. Lukehart was arrested after the courts found he had caused broken ribs, retinal hemorrhages and head trauma in an 8-month-old girl, whose mother he was dating at the time. That abuse was reported in 1994 and his conviction came two years later. Having exhausted all appeals, Lukehart’s execution is to be held between June 2 and 9 at the Florida State Prison in Raiford, DeSantis wrote.
