This somewhat warm afternoon while we gamed, luckily we suffered no overly loud musicians. Yeah!

This was another of our regularly scheduled Saturday afternoon game sessions. We had three gamers today: Jeff G, Michelle C, and myself.

Our first game was Jeff G’s Point Salad. Here’s most of its description from BGG: “Point Salad is a fast and fun card drafting game...” “Cards come in six different types of veggies, and the back of each card has a different scoring method. So for instance, one scoring method may award 2 points for every carrot you have, but deduct a point for every onion. By drafting combinations of veggies and point cards that work for your strategy, you can amass the most points and win.”

Scores: Michelle C 110, Jeff G 68, Michael W 58. Duration: 33 minutes. I believe Michelle liked it. To me it was merely OK. I suppose I’d play it again, just not anytime soon. In a word my reaction was “eh”. I rated it “5” on BGG (mediocre - take it or leave it).

Our second game was Jeff’s Oh My Goods! Here’s its description from BGG: “... players are European artisans during the Middle Ages who produce tools, barrels, glass windows, and many other goods. Only if you make clever use of your production chains will you have the most victory points at the end of the game.”

Its an engine building type card game. The main mechanism is card drafting.

Scores: Jeff G 28, Michelle C 25, Michael W 22. Duration: an hour and 19 minutes.

Once again I think my opponents liked the game much more than I did. Again, my view was “eh”. I rated it “5” on BGG (mediocre - take it or leave it). BGG says this is a 30 minute game. I can't see that occurring unless all players are intimately familiar with it.

Our third game was Jeff G’s America’s Main Street. It concerned driving from coast to coast by drawing colored cubes out of a black bag. The game board has two sides. One side was titled, “Get Your Kicks.” The board on the back was titled “Your Mileage May Vary.” We played both sides today. The mechanics are almost the same for both sides. In essence players take turns making blind draws out of a black bag containing little wooden cues in nine different colors. If a player draws more than one of a color per turn he/she has to put all the cubes drawn that turn back in the bag; its a wasted turn. So this is in essence a “push your luck” type game.

Game #1 (the obverse side of the board): We took turns pushing our luck trying to blindly draw the cube colors we needed to complete our journey. I’d guess about half a player’s turns were a bust. To me the game was initially entertaining, as just about any cube color one drew could be placed. Yet by about the 2/3’s to 3/4 mark the mechanism became a little tedious, and time seemed to drag. So my initial good opinion of the game soon began to fade. By the end I was just glad it was over.

Scores: Jeff G 55, Michelle C 31, Michael W 30. Duration: 12 minutes.

Game #2 (the reverse side of the board): More pressing your luck, hoping to draw the color of cubes you needed. And the cube color distribution was not even. There were more of certain colors and less of some. Just as there were more spots to place some drawn cubes than others, as some states could only hold a few cubes, but others could hold more. For example, you might spend several turns trying to get just one color of cube. That’s what made the last part of the game so tedious.

This side of the board didn’t have “scores” per se. It was just a race to see who could complete their journey first (second and third).

Scores: Michael W won, Michelle C came in second, and Jeff G came in third. Duration: 17 minutes.

Yet again I think my opponents liked the game much more than I did. My view was “eh”. I rated it “5” on BGG (mediocre - take it or leave it). BGG says this is a 10 to 20 minute game. For once I agree with BGG’s time estimate.

Lastly, Jeff took ten minutes to give Michelle and I an overview of his new Ticket to Ride: London game. We then left at 4:10 PM.

See BoardgameGeek http://www.boardgamegeek.com/ for more information on the
games mentioned above. And if you're in the area on Saturday afternoon feel free to join us for a game.
