See if the video will play in Safari with extensions disabled using the
iPad user agent string.

I use Google Chrome to watch Flash videos. Safari's Develop menu has a
time-saving item that allows you to open a page with other web browsers.

So very intuitive. Just works.

I have no trouble on Snow Leopard, the Flash plugin (23.0 r0) seeming
to work fine.

Don't got to sites that lie and claim to require Flash.

Also, don't run Flash.

The linky works for me. Firefox 43-ish, no Flash. Loads of "security"
stuff like Ghostery.
I see a wave hitting a beach in New Jersey, is that what I'm supposed

So sorry for my mistatement above, please review. The problem was
evidenced in Safari alone.

Sure; it is a webpage for providing live streaming. At the time, it was
a UN official discussing UN issues.

Though solving this issue with Safari was addressed by avoiding it, and
changing my user agent to iPad, I still encounter this issue where iPad
won't work. Hulu, for instance: It wants me to download iPad software
to view the movie.

When attempting to view a movie Hulu carps with this:

"Hulu requires Flash Player 11.0.1.152. Please download and install the
latest version of Flash Player before continuing." I now have
v23.0.0.185, which is clearly much newer than 11.0.1.152.

Hulu doesn't (easily) provide support, so any ideas about what might be
causing an errant indication of my less-than-up-to-date version of
Flash Player?

Called Hulu and went through a 20 minute elimination process. In the
end it wouldn't load with Firefox either, though without the Flash
complaint. It simply gave me a black screen. It did operate correctly
with Chrome which I installed solely to test it. So; unresolved.

Gtr-

Check to see if the user agent setting might have somehow been changed.

The numbering difference between your Flash Player and Hulu's seems
strange, like they might be on two different "tracks". When you get the
Hulu error message, does it give you an option to download the "newer"
version of Flash Player?

Yes, it changed back "Default", which is where it always changes back
to. Nevertheless, I changed it to iPad, which demands I download the
iPad software. I can change it to Chrome - Mac, Firefox - Mac, Firefox
- Windows--it really doesn't matter; they all give the same wacky error.

No, as indicated above it tells me to install the latest version, no
more. I have, of course. The cserve guy at Hulu new less than I did
about all related matters. I have the feeling that it's checking the
Flash version by some antiquated method that doesn't recognize anything
over 20 or some such.

In any case, I logged in to my computer as a "guest user" and tried it
there. Same result.

Flash 23.0.0.162 has been superceded by 23.0.0.185. Make sure you
have that version, as Apple disabled older versions with security
issues. Go to System Preferences -> Flash -> Check Now (for latest
version).

Also make sure that Flash is enabled: Safari -> Preferences
-> Security -> Plug-In Settings -> Flash.  If that's on, also make
sure that any websites you want Flash on are listed as ON or that
"OTHER WEBSITES" for Flash says ON.

This all changed in a recent Safari update.

I do.

I have!

BINGO! You win the prize. Many thanks indeed. I'll contact Hulu who
doesn't have the slightest clue.

I am and will remain deeply in your debt.

Damn, I love usenet. When this thing poops out there will be a lot of
problems I'll just have to give up on! When usenet works, it works
really really good!

Many years ago when I still had Flash installed on my computer I had a
similar problem with CBS. When trying to view 60 Minutes, it would
complain that it needed at least Flash 9. I had Flash 10 at the time. I
re-installed Flash 9 as a test, and then it worked. But I did not want
an outdated version of Flash; an up-to-date version is bad enough. I
went in with Property List Editor and made Flash 10 lie and claim to be
Flash 9. That worked. Eventually when Flash got up to maybe 13 or so CBS
realized that 10 was not less than 9 just because it started with a 1.

Try it. It might work.

Interesting. But I'm not quite sure what it is I'm supposed to try.
Editing the Property List for version 23.x.x.x to read as 12 or some
such?

Yes. Look at
Library/Internet plug-Ins/FlashPlayer.plugin/Contents/Info.plist.
You have to right-click on FlashPlayer.plugin and select "Show Package
Contents" to get there.

Edit this with Property List Editor (if you have it) or with any text
editor.

The version of Flash I found most quickly in my old backups was pretty
ancient, but only the numbers will be different in your version. In
mine, opposite "Get Info string" it reads: "Adobe Flash Player 10.3r183
Copyright (c) 1996-2011 Adobe Systems Incorporated. All rights
reserved." Change the 10.3r183 part (or whatever you have there) to a
string in the same format but matching the number the website wanted to
see. For example if they insisted you must have at least Flash 15 then
change the 10.3r183 part to 15.3r183.

Opposite "Bundle version string, short" mine reads "10.3.183.11" If you
want to claim to have Flash 15, make that 15.3.183.11. (Just change the
10 part of the string, or the 23 you probably have there, to 15. Keep
the rest of the string whatever your real 23 version has there. Do the
same thing for the Get Info string of course. Just change 10, or in your
case 23, to 15, or whatever the website wants. Leave the rest of the
string, including the "r" if it appears as it does for the "Get Info
String", alone.)

Opposite "Bundle version" mine reads "10.3.183.11" and that should be
changed too in the same way.

Opposite "WebPluginDescription" mine reads "Shockwave Flash 10.3r183"
and you'll want to change that similarly. Keep the "r" of course. Just
change the "23" you'll no doubt have there to "15" or whatever the
website wants.

It wouldn't hurt to duplicate the original Flash plug-in before you
start editing it, in case you want the original back.

And make sure the ownership and permissions business after you finish
editing is what it was before you began.

This sounds thoroughly feasible. I use to have to do this with Pith
Helmet long ago (IIRC) and precious few others. Duly stashed for
future application. Thanks.

Rule #1.0: Always backup your computer/device before jacking around
with software or hardware even if you know what you're doing.
Rule #1.01: Always work with a software copy.
