#94847 — Preferred Browsers and why

SubjectPreferred Browsers and why
Message-ID<270920162116377480%otto@bogus.address.com>
Firefox has just about run its course for me after this last update.
I've been using Mozilla since the early days of Netscape but it's time
to move on to a grown up browser. I've migrated everything over to
Safari but I'm open to suggestions and why.

Safari is my primary browser. I occasionally use Chrome for something.

Because Safari is tied to the OS version, it is NOT my browser of
choice. I use it for times where Firefox has problems with a web site.

I would have to fugure out how to get the same ttpe of add-ons on Safari
as I have on Firefox, and too lazy to do that research.

So... all the time then?

Firefox is a clusterfuck and has been pretty much a disaster since
version 4.

Anybody using Vivaldi? I've tried it a couple of times when FF failed.

Interesting. It is working for me without any problems.
I use it because I just like it and it does everything I want it to.

I've found SeaMonkey to be a good sidekick to Firefox:

I use Chrome, because it's the only (halfway) workable solution I have
found for using multiple personalities. I need to be able to log into
several websites with both my personal account and my work account, and
using Chrome's "People" feature allows me to do that. I always have two
browser windows open (each with multiple tabs), one for work, the other
for private. The only thing I need to remember is to make sure the right
window is in front before clicking a link in an email. That's a hassle,
but at least it's possible at all. (Oh, and it sucks that the history is
not shared between the windows.)

Without this requirement, I would use Safari instead.

Safari has been my browser of choice for many years, because for the
majority of the web sites I visit, it works just fine, and it runs the
browser extensions I want (AdBlock Plus, User CSS, Blur). On the rare
occasion I need to visit a web site that doesn't work well with Safari,
I use Firefox.

I prefer Chrome. In large part of the bookmark bar being "icons" rather
than text which seems to be Safari's only mode. If Safari would do the
icons, I'd probably jump - Safari is better integrated to the OS X
experience, to be sure.

Chrome is a pig and uses far more memory and CPU than any of the other
browsers. Running Chrome on my wife's MacBook drops the battery life by
up to 50%.

I'm on machines that are plugged in almost always, so that's not that
much of an issue. I agree that Chrome does dig at the CPU pretty hard
for no tangible reason quite often.

That said, the UI of Chrome suits me far better than that of Safari.
Why Safari doesn't allow icons in lieu of titles for the bookbar is a
mystery.

Meh. That's definitely not enough of a reason for me to switch to some
other web browser that has worse performance and uses more system
resources. It is good to have choices, though.

Snapshot of my bookbars (Chrome and Safari)

https://www.dropbox.com/s/ai4o2rmv28h793o/Screen%20Shot%202016-09-30%20at%2015.58.34.png

The top one icons beats the crap out of safar's monochrome letters.
More links on the bookbar too.

Really don't get Apple forcing monochrome - recall when the sidebar in
Finder could have coloured BG's ??? all gone. Harder to quickly locate
things.

For you. For me it's important.

Apart from that, Chrome is even one of the most insecure and
untrustworthey browsers at all - a real sky. *Anything* you write,
search and/or visit is reported /directly/ to Google!

Chrome is excommunicated here in the house on any computer - and if
anyone comes around with his/her laptop/tablet and want to connect, they
are also excommunicated if Chrome is installed.

Cheers, Erik Richard
