Both VMware Fusion and Parallels Desktop refuse to run 10.6 client
versions, which means you must purchase 10.6 server to run it.
Virtual Box will allow you to run 10.6 client, but it's up to you to set
it up correctly, and installing software updates to get to 10.6.8 can be
problematic as well.

That's been my experience as well. And in addition to being clunky and
relatively unstable, Virtual Box sorely lacks many integration features,
such as clipboard sharing, and other things that make it harder to work
with guest operating systems compared with Fusion and Desktop. You get
what you pay for.

For the benefit of the OP, it should be pointed out that Snow Leopard
server currently retails for around $20 (last I checked), so this isn't
really a major hurdle.

Thank you to everyone who commented on virtualization vs. emulation, on
Virtual Box and it shortcomings, and on the need for Snow Leopard Server
rather than the usual version of Snow Leopard.

I am aware that without hacks of debatable legality one cannot run the
usual version of Snow Leopard in a virtual machine but can run the
Server version (something which makes no sense to me, but perhaps makes
some lawyers happy). So a while ago, realizing that some fine day I'd
have to kiss 10.6 good-bye except in a virtual machine, I bought a copy
of Snow Leopard Server, fearing that if I waited too long Apple might no
longer let me buy 10.6 Server. It has sat on the shelf ever since.

Incidentally, it cost me CDN$20 (I think plus GST, but nearly everything
has GST on it here, including items imported from the US). I was about
to order it from Apple USA and have it shipped to a drop point in the US
assuming it would be somewhat more expensive up here than would be
justified on the basis of currency exchange rates, and then I found out
that it cost $20 in either country. Makes about as much sense as
allowing 10.6 Server but not plain 10.6!

I'm using Virtual Box, because it's free. I don't see the point in
paying $80/year just to run one this application.

It has some issues, though. There's no clipboard sharing or host
filesystem access, because they never created Desktop Additions for OS X.

Precisely, at least for Mac OS 10.6.8 with Safari, Firefox, SeaMonkey,
Camino, iCab, Chrome, and Chromium on every web site for which I tried
it. And the icon does appear when I need my computer log-in password and
press the Caps Lock key. However:

I suspect that's it. I'll try it under 10.11. (I foolishly never
downloaded anything 10.7 through 10.10, and now I can't. I vowed not to
make that mistake again with 10.11, and now I hear I need not have
rushed.)

Probably no longer useful (except in the case of models which cannot
upgrade beyond 10.7), but you can still _buy_ 10.7 and 10.8, from
Apple's online store. They send you a redemption code to use in App
Store.

http://www.apple.com/shop/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion
http://www.apple.com/shop/product/D6377Z/A/os-x-mountain-lion

For completeness: Snow Leopard is still available on DVD.

http://www.apple.com/shop/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard

It isn't possible to get 10.9 or 10.10 any more, unless those versions
are already on your Apple ID's purchased list (i.e. you got them before
they were superseded).

In your case, 10.8 might be useful as it can run MT-NewsWatcher (10.9
broke it), but all of 10.6 - 10.8 have the same problem with running out
of web browsers that are still being updated.

That's swell if you're a touch typist but if, like me, you're
looking at the keyboard then a display on the screen doesn't help
until after you've made the error and look up. If you're really
clumsy, you might turn caps lock on and then a few keystrokes later
turn it off again, leaving no clue as to why the password was
rejected.

So don't use keyboards without visual LED indicators for the caps lock
key. It's a simple solution that has worked for me for over a decade.

But then I would have to give up my Logitech solar powered 100+ key
keyboard that I love. Instead I installed Capsy and now (except from
cold start) it beeps when I hit caps lock. Problem solved.

Installed Sierra on my SO's laptop yesterday. Many settings were lost
including AppleID, sharing, and others. But fixed those and there were
no further issues. Will be "integrating" her new iPhone 7 with the MBA
today so a chance to go over all of the settings.

I'll probably update my iMac today and remaining work xMacs during the week.

Also screwed up my keyboard settings (option and CMD keys). I don't
recall this happening on previous installs. Easily remedied of course.

Option and Command? Which settings would those be?

Useful with third party keyboards not made for Macs.

SysPrefs|Keyboard|Modifier Keys.

I use a Logitech keyboard. With the "default"[?] setting the option and
CMD keys are reversed. (The one marked with the MS Windows Start logo /
option / alt became CMD; the one marked with the Apple CMD flower etc.
became the option key).

In past .x updates the prior settings were retained (at least of the
last few - can't remember all of them).

I've had this keyboard since 2008 or 9 as I've never liked the Apple
chicklet keyboards. Though that's what I use at work and I've come to
"accept" it.

Yuck. No thanks.

Seems like a setting that should be preserved under normal
circumstances. Perhaps in Sierra Apple changed code in the area of
identifying keyboards and lost the settings as a result.

I prefer Apple's keyboard to just about any other because the low travel
and tactile feedback allow me to type faster with less noise and effort.
But then I've been using them almost exclusively for many years.

Gonna have to doubt you on the "less noise" and "low travel" parts. To each
his own, of course.

Not what I meant. I like the longer travel. Agree that it's noisier
but then that keeps people from bothering me as they know I dislike
disruption while ... working and they can hear these babies from down
the hall ... Yeah, yeah, I'm working and there's no point in mowing the
lawn now until after the leaves begin to fall, yeah, yeah.
