It's possible, though not likely, that laptops and iMacs will be
released at the same time. More likely it'll be the laptops in October
and the iMacs in November ... if anything is released at all.

There's no need for a thinner MacBook Pro. It's ridiculous Ive's
constant push for everything to be every thinner. :-(

The MacBook Air is pretty much pointless now since the release of the
MacBook (non-Pro).

Just what I need, a thinner MBP. Remove the ports, the display, the
internals, and sell a beautifully machined aluminum slab with the Apple
logo. It'll be so light that I can carry it everywhere and impress all
the kids.

A new MBP with 4 USB-C ports that is lighter than the current MPB would
be very welcome in this house.

They actually introduced the new MacBook Pro two weeks ago, but it was

Coincidence for you. "katana" is the feminine form of the Hebrew
adjective "small."

BTW, can't remember where I read it yesterday, but latest rumour is the
announcement on the 27th covers only laptops, not iMacs, MacPro or Mini.

(the later 2 , we know not to expect, but there were expectations of iMacs).

One explanation: new Intel chips for deskops not ready till January.

It's all over the usual rumor / news websites: MacRumors, AppleInsider,
etc.

> (the later 2 , we know not to expect, but there were expectations of iMacs).

Nope. There were rumors by fools who don't know how Apple releases
their new models. The expectations of people with brains was that this
would almost certainly be laptops only, with iMacs possibly next month,
but ...

> One explanation: new Intel chips for deskops not ready till January.

The rumours for the new iMac have very few changes. About the only
thing that really changes is AMD graphics in some models and possibly a
slight speed-bump. If a speed-bumped iMac does get released before
Christmas, there will likely be a proper new model released in about
April / May next year.

Main explanation is that Apple simply doesn't (usually) release
multiple different models at the same time. They usually separate
desktop, laptop, and iOS device releases, and software separate again
with the WWDC returning to a software event. This is done for various
logistical reasons (not the least of which is avoiding having huge
piles of different new models arriving on store doorsteps at the same
time)

But ! But ! But ! Christmas season ... !

I am guessing chip releaase dates have more to do with computer releases
than marketing consideration of announcing new products together.

Speed bumps may not even be announced. Just posted on websites for new
sales.

If the rumour of new AMD graphics is true, then a speed-bumped iMac
could get an small announcement event, especially if the rumoured new
separate display is released too (as a second display for the iMac for
example).

More "proof" from MacRumors.com that updated iMac and Mac Pro models
are NOT part of this week's event ...

Apple Registers Three New Macs in Eurasia Ahead
    of Thursday's 'Hello Again' Event
    -----------------------------------------------
Just three days before Apple's "Hello Again" event,
where it is widely expected to announce new Macs,
French website Consomac has discovered a new
Russian-language regulatory filing, in the Eurasian
Economic Commission database, that points towards
at least three new models running macOS Sierra
    launching soon.

The three new Macs, identified only with model
numbers A1706, A1707, A1708, are likely to be new
13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pros alongside a new
13-inch MacBook, which could be a refreshed Air
model, based on previous reports. However, adding
confusion to the mix is the consecutive sequence
    of the model numbers.

The filing, published today, satisfies Russia's
requirement for companies to register all products
    containing encryption and/or cryptographic tools.

Over the weekend, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi
Kuo said he believes the highlight of Apple's event
on Thursday will be a redesigned MacBook Pro in
both 13-inch and 15-inch sizes, adopting an OLED
touch bar and Touch ID sensor, USB-C with
Thunderbolt 3, and the same butterfly keyboard
design introduced on the MacBook in 2015.

The all-new MacBook Pro is also expected to have
faster Intel Skylake processors and faster graphics,
possibly including the option of AMD "Polaris"
graphics on higher-end models. Kuo said Apple will
offer a new option of 2TB SSD storage, while it or
    a third-party supplier will release a MagSafe-like
    USB-C charging adapter.

The new 13-inch MacBook, meanwhile, is likely to be
a refreshed MacBook Air, which would align with
other rumors claiming that only the 13-inch MacBook
Air will be seeing an update with new USB-C ports.
However, there is an outside chance the model could
be a slightly larger version of the current 12-inch
    MacBook.

The loosely translated filing refers to the Macs as
    "portable personal computers," effectively ruling
out the iMac and Mac Pro.

The three consecutive model numbers may simply be different
configurations of MacBook Pro models, so the MacBook / MacBook Air
could also not be making an appearance / announcement at the event ...
unless, potentially, it isn't actually shipping until a little later.

Be ready for... wait for it.... ESCAPEGATE

Yep, appears the new MacBookPro will be without the top rows, and that
includes the disapearance of the escape key.

Of course, it all depends on how Apple does it. If the "touch pad" still
generates the same key event as the current leftmost key, then this is a
no brainer as nothing would change except what appears on the key will
be software configurable.

Introducing the iEscape key :-)

no it doesn't.

the bar can be anything.

in normal use, it's probably shows an escape key, brightness & volume
buttons (or optionally fkeys).

presumably, apps will be able to configure it specific to the app.

I find it hard to believe that there will no longer be easy ways to
adjust volume, eject disks, pause/play music, adjust brightness,
launch that (stupid, IMHO) iPad-like app launcher.

But I suspect Ctrl-I will still work.

Although I notice that Ctrl-G no longer works in Terminal.

I assume that by default, the new "software" top row will emulate
current keyboard top row with same keycap logos and functionality.

The big question is whether any software will really bother with the
extra code to load new "key caps" when only a percentage of users will
have machines that can make use of it.
