In my experience, HP printers are absolutely terrible, constantly producing stripy images and needing cleaned several times. And their drivers are buggy. I've actually seen a computer hang completely because an HP driver was looking for a printer which was not currently connected to the network. > that's actually a big *advantage* of hp printers. It isn't, because the quality of the head on a throwaway cartridge will be much much lower than one that comes with the printer and is designed to last the life of it. > on the other hand, > every time the combo is replaced, the printer needs to be recalibrated, > making it a very poor choice for photos (along with other reasons). > > with ink jet printers where only the ink is replaced, a head clog means > running ink-wasting If you buy cheap ink, it isn't that much of a waste. > clean cycles hoping that it works without burning > out the heads in the process. if the heads end up fried, the printer > will need to be replaced. at best, it's a lot of wasted ink, paper and > time. I find print heads last for ages. They don't wear out any more often than other parts in the printer, like the paper feed mechanism, the head movement, etc. > aftermarket inks won't have the same colour gamut What's with the word "gamut"? It's sounds foreign. What's wrong with "range"? "Gamut" and "onus" really annoy me. Gamut doesn't sound English and onus sounds like anus. > as original inks and > won't be consistent batch to batch (especially if you buy whatever is > on sale that week). So you stick to one source. > the ink is lower quality (that's why it's cheaper) It's cheaper because Epson/HP/whatever aren't ripping you off and funding their cut price printers with it. Why do you think the printer companies get so upset about fake ink? They make most of their profits on it. > and will probably fade sooner. it might also dry out due to age sooner > than genuine inks, causing a clog. if aftermarket ink has pigment > particles larger than the print head nozzles, it *will* clog (basic > physics). If you buy genuine HP ink in cartridges with heads on each time, maybe. But you can't get cheap toner. I used to work in a place where the management said that a colour inkjet cost 14p a page, and a colour laser photocopier/printer cost 6p a page. I did my own calculations and came to the conclusion it was 1p a page for the inkjet, not 14p. I found out that Xerox (the company selling us the photocopiers) were the ones that did the research, and deliberately found the most expensive inkjets you could use. Our management weren't the sharpest knives in the drawer. Needless to say I ignored their requirements for purchasing and bought whatever the hell I liked. -- Q. What's the difference between a brown-noser and a shit-head? A. Depth perception.
