I doubt accountants are involved in any of that. Direction seems to have shifted to a style-over-substance model. Even Apple’s ads are terrible these days. I miss the “Design with a capital D” days of Jobs. And I’m not sure an accountant would even reach your conclusion. Apple releases macOS updates for free, so you’d have to make the case that the route of hardware upgrades is more profitable than new sales. I don’t see how that’s possible, unless Apple mandates that *they* must be the ones doing those upgrades. > Also, with CPUs now more or less stable (Moore's law stopped for CPUs), > longevity and minimalist CPU upgrades may become more frequent. Many would disagree with your Moore’s Law conclusion, to varying degrees. Regardless, the conclusion doesn’t point to a modular Mac making more sense. If CPUs are stagnating, there’s even *less* reason to bother putting them on a socket. On the other hand, if the industry is advancing in other ways in attempts to get more performance, it means the *way* in which the components are connecting are changing so rapidly that you can’t set a solid standard for modularity, especially for a 10 year time frame. That has been true well beyond the CPU for a long time. There are very few things internal to a 2007 Mac *or* PC that would find a place to fit inside a 2017 system. > Apple won't convince someone to upgrade the whole machine for a small > performance upgrade, but spending a few hundred bucks for new CPU might > appeal to a lot of people. Or they can do what they do now: stop supporting the older hardware just because it’s old, forcing people to upgrade to a new machine (even one with a shittier design) regardless of how little the performance improves. -- "Also . . .
