Actually is it was the solder joints that failed - I misstated that 
above.  Attempted re-flow which worked for a while (2 months).

I've never heard of solder joints failing on RAM mounts (cue he who 
knows of every edge case in the universe).

I truly think Apple's obsession with thinness, style and manufacturing 
cost (not in any order) are detrimental to the product and to its users.

My iMac is a an example: the HD lies within a few mm of the back shell. 
But to get at it requires ordering a screen seal (iFixIt) and then an 
odyssey of disassembly.  This machine is a 5 y old model.  I may want to 
SSD it sometime in the next 2 years to give it a small boost.  That day 
will be long.

Desktop machines do not have to be bleeding edge thin or small at the 
sacrifice of simple maintenance.  At least the memory ports on the iMac 
are accessible - I could bump this machine from 24 to 32 GB in a jiffy 
(just no real need to do so).
