Breville's Barista Express (~$600) seems to fit into this slot. We've had one at home for six years now, and use it almost daily - several times a day when we do use it. It has a built-in grinder with adjustable grind size and dose settings, automatic digital temperature controlled water and pressure controls that allow you to override with your own settings. It'll brew espresso in automated fashion or manually if you prefer to control the grind size, grind dose, temperature, shot volume, and so on (or any combination) yourself. It puts our nearly perfect espresso every single time. We love the machine; and the espresso that comes out of it is *far* better than what you get at most any fast espresso shop - even better ones than Starbucks, which has the bar set really low, IMHO. Highly recommended for those who want a good espresso at home without the snobbish elite prices. : ) -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter.
