I agree if it is serious. Hopefully, he can get the fixes for free since
his AppleCare just expired since he got it in the summer of 2012.

Yes, Time Machine backups on an external USB2 HDD before he went on the
trip. I hope his backup is good!

This machine was never opened. Everything is from the original bought
from his university's computer store.

Ah, but isn't it much harder with a MBP since Apple made it harder to do
those things? Even battery replacements is difficult these days.

Beta, eh? ;) Yeah, waiting sucks. Last time we went to the Apple retail
store to get a new iPhone, my client brought his MBP so we could
iTunes sync in the store in case there were problems. Apple guy said to
do it at home. Bah.
