To the user (his perception) it's a supported product.  He doesn't care 
as long as there is no ongoing support cost to him.  Why Apple refers to 
it as "free of charge" support.

Apple in fact allocate (defer) from revenue the estimated cost of the 
"free of charge" support for a product in a 2 to 4 year window 
(according to the product kind) with a straight line transfer to revenue 
as the quarters click by.  (Of course the expense of support runs on 
eating into that revenue).

OTOH from the customer POV, the "free" support goes for more than 4 
years esp. with the Mac.

Hmm, cellphones?  Is this a cellphone group?

Mac OS upgrades in the past were at a price.  Now they are free of 
charge.  That's all a customer sees.
