You don't need newer hardware to run a later operating system, though doing so comes with the caveat that certain features may not work as expected due to the older hardware and end of support from Apple. Open Core Legacy Patcher (OCLP) lets you install newer unsupported operating system versions on older Macs. The "Getting Started" link takes you to the documentation. Look up your particular model on the "Supported Models" page and make note of what is written in the Additional Info column to see any issues there. I've used OCLP on Macs of several different years and models with great success.
