#953 — Cannot change name of photo

FromDavid Ross <david@djross.com.au>
Date2011-03-31 17:48 +1100
SubjectCannot change name of photo
Message-ID<david-DFA210.17484331032011@news.bigpond.com>
Hi
I have a number of Photos which I wish to rename. However, when I
attempt to rename them I get an error message saying I do not have
permission to change the name.

I have gone to 'get info' and changed the Sharing and Permissions to
allow Me and everyone to have read and write priviliges, have tried
copying the photo, and tried opening it in Preview and then saving it.

No Luck with any of these approaches

Of course I have also repaired permisions, twice

Any ideas? Because I have exhausted mine

David

How have you been trying to change their names? By selecting file
name or name under icons?

Not quite sure what you mean - I just do the normal select the icon, hit
enter, then type the new name. That works ok up to that point, but when
I attempt to leave the icon that is when I get the message about not
having privilege to do that and then the icon assumes its original name.

OK, that is pretty regular. (I tend to just click on the name and
wait for it to be selected. Your Enter might be faster in fact!).

What does it actually say on your Get Info panel for one of these
photos? Is it locked? What are the permissions? Are you logged in
as adminstrator?

What happens when you send an example to yourself as an email
attachment? When you receive it try right or control click on the
attachment icon and save as under a new name.

That I and everyone has read and write permission (I set it to that)

Is it locked?
No

What are the permissions?

As above

Are you logged in as adminstrator?

Yes, and I am the only user on this Mac

I haven't tried that - I have tried copying but again got the message
that I dont have permission to do that

Its a real mystery to me

And will you try it? Or send me an example if it is not
confidential?

I just tried mailing it to myself as you suggested and found I could
save it under a new name - mmm

So that is one workaround thanks, though I am not sure if I lose any
quality by doing that.

However, I would still like to know why I get the "you don't have
permission to rename the item "DSC01198.JPG" message. This more what
one expects from Windows! Macs just do not usually do such strange
things to ones files

Anyway, I have a copy of the pic to you - I put it in a folder as saving
it from an email seems to get rid of whatever it is that stops it from
being renamed. Will appreciate you comments

There is "Save as" and there is the simpler changing the name in
Finder, the latter would not affect quality while the former
might (but probably only marginally in this case).

I opened it in Fireworks no problem? Dragging to an open browser
window also opened it fine. In my Get Info I have read and write
permission while "everyone" has "read only". I had no problem
changing the name using your select file name/Enter technique.
Nor - and perhaps you might try this if you have not already,
select/Command D (to duplicate) - duplicating and changing name
of duplicate.

How does your Sony save to disk? Are you saving it to HD? My Sony
Cybershot is really beaut for this and simply appears as a disk,
no software needed to transfer, unlike my Canon G11 which comes
with a mass of pesky software I really don't want but seem to
need to get at the pics to transfer them to my Mac (where I have
all the facilities I need (like PS and Fireworks)).

I simply don't know why you can't rename them straight off
(assuming you transfer first to your Mac)?

Have you got another Mac or another pristine (just created)
*account* on your Mac? Perhaps try plugging in your Sony when you
have a new account opened. Are you using Sony supplied software
to transfer the images to your Mac?

There is also the Finder's "Duplicate" function.

No, you didn't. You mentioned changing the name in the Finder which the
OP had already tried and, if I recall correctly, was the topic of the
post which started this thread.

I suggested duplicating the original file to see if the name of the
duplicate could be changed.

$1000 US? I take it this is a side bet, the real money coming
from Tom (who I have heard is very rich). <g>

If you cannot stomach handing money over to a visitor to your
earth, how about agreeing to write lines publicly (like a
million): "I must carefully read poor old dorayme's posts
completely and thoroughly" <g>

I read "poor old dorayme's posts" and found "changing the name in
Finder" but no mention of the Finder's Duplicate function. However,
things may read differently when you can't see the North Star.

Dorayme doesn't have a threaded news reader so really has no idea
who said what when.

Nonsense, dorayme has facilities. And it is small "d" btw.

I notice you still are avoiding our bet?

Lay out crisp terms for it, exact terms if you are not confident
of it being resolved and we will continue. But, being your
average usenet guy sitting there in some goddamm hole behind a
keyboard, I guess you will never actually take up a real
challenge where you stand to lose something (I like my 'lines'

I don't actually stand to lose anything because there is no way I
would make a real bet with some cyberdipshit hiding behind a handle.
I have, however, taken another look at the subject article and see
that you did in fact write, "perhaps you might try this if you have
not already, select/Command D (to duplicate) - duplicating and
changing name of duplicate".

So you win.
