That's not the case with calendars. That's going to be a problem no matter what sort of files you use in your file sharing methodology. Cloud-based sharing with iCloud is *much* more preferable to manual file sharing: my calendar is up to date on all of my devices and computers all of the time without any manual intervention from you. Macs have long lives, but eventually the hardware becomes so old that it no longer supports newer functionality.
