Word files are still just individual files that contain all of the
information. That's not the case with calendars. Have a look in
~/Library/Calendars some time and you'll see just how complex the data
is compared with simple Word files. ; )

That's going to be a problem no matter what sort of files you use in
your file sharing methodology. Cloud-based sharing with iCloud is *much*
more preferable to manual file sharing: my calendar is up to date on all
of my devices and computers all of the time without any manual
intervention from you. It mostly Just Works™.

That you've gone this long without upgrading your hardware is
commendable. Macs have long lives, but eventually the hardware becomes
so old that it no longer supports newer functionality. At that point you
get to make the decision to either live without newer features or
upgrade your hardware.
