I am a happy gamer this week. First Gamersgate provided me with the wonderfully weird "Steam Slug", now they've made my week by adding the marvelously craptastic "Chernobyl: Terrorist Attack" to their catalogue of obscure and naff games. "Chernobyl:Terrorist Attack" is an FPS that isn't anything like any of the S.T.A.L.KE.R. games. It is set in Prypiat (as spelt in the game and pronounced "Prippit") in and around the Chernobyl Nuclear Plant, but that's where any similarities end. The story is simple enough, terrorist have taken control of the NNP and are threatening to blow it up, unleashing further nuclear devastation in an area already ravaged by radiation. Apparently this also threatens the world at large as well. As I'm sure you can guess, your job is to single handedly wipe out this threat and save the world. The graphics are quite nice but nothing like cutting edge. The weapon models are rather poor but the sounds are adequate. Gameplay consists of basic missions such as "Oh no it's an ambush, kill 25 enemies before moving on to the next area". When you've done that you get to move on, only to be told "Look out! It's a helicopter! Hide in the bushes. It's another ambush! Kill all the enemies!" Objectives are marked on your mini-map. If you stray from your "objective area" you mysteriously die. I'm not quite sure why you die. You just do. You get a message that tells you to stay in that area and then get taken back to the last checkpoint. When you kill the last enemy to complete an objective, you get a cutscene that dramatically zooms in on your last victim as he or she falls to the floor. It's really naff. I don't know why you get to see that. You just do. This game is bastard hard. Whereas "Steam Slug" is difficult due to the sheer number of enemies thrown at you at once and the pure feebleness of your weapons. "Chernobyl: Terrorist Attack" is hard because you can barely see your enemies and they can shoot a bumblebee out of the air from 200m with a handgun. To make it even harder, you only have a small amount of ammunition and grenades. Just about enough to clear a map if you make practically every shot count. To get more you have to kill your enemies and pick up what they drop. This actually makes the game quite challenging and rather fun. The AI is pretty basic to say the least, but enemies will pursue you if you shoot at them and run away. If you do that you soon die because you "left the objective area", but I guess it's the thought that counts. There are areas that you can't enter for more than a few seconds due to radiation. These areas are random and unmarked. There is no rhyme nor reason as to why they're "dirty" and adjoining areas are not. They just are. "Chernobyl: Terrorist Attack" is suitably dreadful. I love it. £14.95 well spent. http://www.gamersgate.co.uk/DD-CHERNOBYL/chernobyl-terrorist-attack
