In article <f27bcc7e-67a7-4123-8722-ef96dd482006@p13g2000yqh.googlegroups.com>, Hans Vlems <hvlems@freenet.de> writes: > > There are several interesting stories about moving VAX hardware. > I noticed that the livingcomputermuseum site uses the model number > 11/780-5, while I'm fairly sure it was called a VAX 11/785 by DEC. > Any reason for adopting this somewhat strange nomenclature? The VAX > 11/782 wasn't called VAX 11/780-2, was it? An 11/780-5 is basically an 11/780 upgraded to an 11/785. An 11/780-2 is basically an 11/780 upgraded to an 11/782. IIRC, DEC stuck the -X on the cabinet instead of trying to take the 0 off. So there are cabinets that have the -X on them, but VMS doesn't know the difference. DEC also offered to split 11/782 into two 11/780 when the 782 was unsupported. I don't know if anyone bought it, and I wonder what they did with the model number on the original cabinet.
