I tried USBinfo, which showed no trace of the printer, and started swapping USB plugs around, seemingly without success. However when I put them back to their original configuration, lo and behold the printer was active and working normally. I guess it must have been a poor connection after all. I'll certainly now keep a copy of the USBinfo diagram for future reference, including a paper (printed!) copy, now showing the printer. Many thanks for providing support in time of need.
