Thanks to all who replied. I'm tackling this bit by bit as we're supposed
to be having a holiday & the Mem Sahib gets a bit miffed if we're not
doing enough sight-seeing, visiting friends & relations a generally
enjoying ourselves.

 The story so far. I've got inveigled into doing a presentation here each
year on aspects of early jazz. I should have finished it all before
leaving UK but you know how time escapes. 

I use OHP. I was adding a jpeg to the folder holding the material and got
an abort on data transfer message. I had a good look at that file and it
seemed OK so I wondered if it was a directory limitation. That's why I
asked the question

I've since discovered Recyclone gave that error as well and so did other
directories. I had to go into the VA on the Windows side to find the
Recyclone bin which was very full as I'd been deleting the unwanted saved
presentations often. Now all seems well.

The presentation has at present 254 files and 101 553 531 bytes which (if
I've done the maths correctly) is 97 Mb, obviously much more than 4Mb. 
So it seems Virtual Acorn running  R  Adjust 4.39 is quite happy.

Is there a RISC OS app that does a less arcane calculation of a
directory's size? I seem to remember !RealCount but can't find a link.

I'll again try adding more files to the presentation and see what
happens. Fingers crossed.
