I've just had to rebuild my Linux box. Tedious but straightforward. Then came setting up newsgroups in Thunderbird. I came across the same problem which I'd met before - being unable to see the groups I wanted to subscribe to. I suffered the same frustration which I'd had before, at least twice. Many years ago I found a way but couldn't remember what it was. The next time, I exported the profile from a working machine and avoided the problem altogether. The solution was simple but it took some finding on the internet. After setting up the account but before trying to subscribe, close Thunderbird and re-open it. That's all it takes. No doubt those of you using Thunderbird will have had no problem but come the day when you've forgotten how, just remember. Close, then open.
