Sadly, applying the settings doesn't seem to solve the problem - I suspect it's something buried in Windows configuration that's been mangled. Oh well. As I said, it's an irritation but I can live with it. Thanks also to Jean-Michel; unfortunately I couldn't find anything there to help, but it was worth a look. It's great to see the newsgroups still active and constructive after all this time! B.
