WAKEFIELD RISC OS COMPUTER CLUB

Mapping Railway History with RiscOSM
------------------------------------

Meeting on Wednesday 1st April at 7.45pm

In this talk, Chris Hall shares how RiscOSM has become his essential tool
for documenting and illustrating railway history. Moving beyond the "trial
and error" of old mapping methods, Chris demonstrates how he uses the
software to bridge the gap between historical research and digital
cartography. Key themes include:

* Tracing Vanished Lines: Using historical data and 25in OS maps to
recreate routes that have been lost for over a century.

* Illustrating for Publication: Generating high-quality, precisely defined
background maps for his books on signal boxes and rail sections.

* Digital Tools & SatNav: A look at his GPS-based "rolling map" project on
the Raspberry Pi and the conversion of legacy file formats into modern
  GPX data.

* Mapping Ireland: Overcoming the specific challenges of generating custom
map tiles for Irish rail networks.

Whether you are a rail enthusiast or a RISC OS user interested in GPS and
mapping, this talk offers a practical look at preserving industrial heritage
through modern software.

This 'virtual' meeting is open to all, and will take place using the Zoom
conferencing service using our regular meeting credentials. Zoom invitations
will be sent out ahead of the meeting, but only to those who email
info2026@wrocc.org.uk to request one. If you would like to be part of the
meeting (and don't already have the link from a previous meeting or receive
an invite in the next 24 hours as a member of WROCC), please RSVP -- at the
latest by the end of Tuesday 31st March (GMT). We email the links out on the
morning of the meeting.

If you haven't used Zoom before, we suggest that before Wednesday you try to
