Image Analysis (Segmentation) toolbox w.o using ESRI tools.

Dear All:

I am Researching an Image Analysis Segmentation problem using Clustering Techniques. TO DO this without using ESRI tools, can I employ standard J2EE tools to develop a TOOLBOX for the WEB. What supported technological frameworks are available (example:will Java Advanced Imaging be applicable?).

Also, can I use JavaScript (Server Node and Thin Client) to enable push/pull content from Amazon Web Services and also TO DO geoprocessing / geocomputation on the fly?.

Any useful suggestions are well appreciated.
