Printer is an HP DeskJet 3755. It uses a tri-color cartridge, and a black cartridge. It's connected to various Windows computers via a Netgear router. Connection is fine. The black cartridge is empty, as demonstrated by the fact that when printing a 'Test page', all that is printed is the blue printer icon, and also in blue, the words "Windows Printer Test Page". When printing any multi-color document, all colors are printed, but nothing black, such as text, appears. OK, it's out of black, but... If I use the printer's control panel to print out internal reports such as "Printer Information Page", or "Printer Status Report", which are in black text, these reports are printed perfectly in black. How is this possible? Hmmm...print jobs issued from Windows don't print black, but print jobs issued internally from the printer's control panel do print black. I downloaded and ran HP's Print and Scan Doctor for Windows. It said it corrected a printer issue (it didn't identify the issue), and then went on to check ink and printing quality, such as alignment and cleaning printheads. The result was that colors were fine, alignment was fine, but it didn't print out any black patterns, saying that the black cartridge was empty. So, HP's own diagnostic verified black ink was empty. But where does the black ink come from to print the internal reports, perfectly? Any ideas?
