I edited the file and made some substitutions suggested by JF, then I 
got a message saying it can't find a font which was in the list of known 
fonts (see below).

Interestingly, it is looking in SYS$COMMON:[SYSFONT.XDPS.OUTLINE] but 
that directory is empty.  Why would it exist if it is empty?  And "DPS" 
sounds like "Display PostScript".  So, could it be that prior to 7.3 it 
was using fonts here, then the upgrade to 7.3 removed files from this 
directory?

Yes, when I have time a) I will learn all about fonts and b) upgrade GV 
and so on, but now I need a quick solution.
