You certainly don't HAVE to decide, in fact you are strongly recommended
NOT to change the FreeType/2 dpi setting from the default of 72dpi unless
you really know what you're doing.

Even I'm not sure exactly what the effect of this setting is, which is
why I buried it on the "advanced" page.

See above.  AFAIK the dpi setting in FreeType/2 is specific to the
internals of the FreeType API and has no relation that I'm aware of
to your OS/2 dpi settings.  

This setting has been present in FreeType/2 since Michal's earliest
releases... possibly he understood what its effects were, but I can't
pretend that I do.
