There are plenty of distributions that don't use systemd, or at least,
not by default. A few examples follow...:
- PCLinuxOS still uses sysvinit.
- Slackware uses the BSD init system, and is now testing Gentoo's
eudev as a replacement for udev, given that the upstream udev
developers have hinted at that udev will not be functional without
systemd anymore in the foreseeable future.
- Gentoo uses its own openrc (in combination with eudev) by default.
openrc is a wrapper (written in C) around sysvinit and supports many
of the touted features of systemd, such as parallel startups and
support for control groups. systemd is however supported in Gentoo,
and even mandatory for people seeking to use GNOME ─ this, because
systemd has deliberately been made into a hard dependency of GNOME
as per Lennart Poettering's request.
- Manjaro is a fork of Arch Linux which also uses eudev and (I
believe) sysvinit.
- Devuan is a fork of Debian which does not use systemd. I'm not
sure which init system they're using, but it might be openrc, a
plain vanilla sysvinit, or Ubuntu's (now abandoned) Upstart.
