In a large company if the question comes up the answer is 'It's not too clear what the hell Cratchit does but he has been doing it for 30 years. If we try to fire him now there will be hell to pay. He'll bitch about ageism, sexism, racism, and a few other isms and we'll look like fools for taking 30 years to figure out that with his mangled, unmaintainable code he is actually worse than useless.'
